Protests in Nairobi over Kenya government's tax hikes | BBC News

Protesters have taken to the streets in Nairobi, Kenya, to challenge the government over a series of unpopular tax proposals - including a 16% levy on bread. On Tuesday, hundreds of protestors - most of them younger people - braved tear gas lobbed by police to march through the capital, Nairobi, bringing the city's central business district to a standstill. The government had earlier defended the tax hikes, which had been projected to raise $2.7bn (£2.1bn), saying they were needed to cut reliance on external borrowing. MPs are now debating the revised bill and are expected to vote on it next Tuesday. Subscribe here: http://bit.ly/1rbfUog For more news, analysis and features visit: www.bbc.com/news #Kenya #BBCNews
