Kenyan President William Ruto addressed the nation on Tuesday evening after protests over tax rises. At least five protesters were shot dead by police in Kenya and a section of parliament went up in flames as demonstrations against new tax proposals escalated on Tuesday. President William Ruto pledged a tough response to what he called the "violence and anarchy". UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said he was "deeply saddened by the reports of deaths and injuries" and urged the Kenyan authorities to "exercise restraint", and called for all demonstrations to be peaceful.
