Is this resort town in Mexico’s Baja Peninsula the next Los Cabos?

What is it about Los Cabos? This stretch of the Pacific coastline in Mexico’s Baja region has remained one of the most popular destinations for North American tourists for decades. While it is easy to see why so many of us love it – whether it’s the natural beauty, leading luxury resorts or handful of Michelin-starred restaurants – the exponential growth in the number of travelers to the area has got us asking, how much love is too much?

Tourists and those looking to put down more permanent roots somewhere off the beaten track - while still serving buckets of that signature East-Coast charm – should take a look towards the town of Loreto, and more specifically Danzante Bay.

This hidden gem on the east coast stretch of the Baja Peninsula is about four hours north of La Paz and about 200 miles north of Cabos San Lucas. Here, you won’t find high-rise developments, massive cruise ships or sprawling all-inclusive resorts.

Instead, disconcerting travelers and want-to-be property owners are heading to this region for its laid-back energy, lack of crowds and spectacular natural beauty that is brimming with wildlife. We have a feeling that this little-known town isn’t going to stay that way for long.

The nearby town of Loreto is rich with culture, beautiful colonial architecture and history dating back to 1697 – in fact, it is the only Pueblo Mágico (that’s a government-designated “magic town”) with an international airport and regular direct flights to the US.

A 30-minute drive from Loreto you’ll find Danzante Bay, a 750-acre master-planned resort and residential cliff-side community where the towering Sierra la Giganta Mountains descend into the Sea of Cortez.

The development resides within the Loreto Bay National Marine Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site so renowned for its marine life, that it is dubbed the “Galápagos of Mexico”. Danzante Bay owners can also enjoy access to the community’s acclaimed Villa del Palmar at the Islands of Loreto resort and the famed Rees Jones-designed TPC Danzante Bay golf course

The kitchen marries natural materials with state-of-the-art appliances

Making the very most of this exciting development is the first estate in Danzante Bay, a stunning five-bedroom property designed by award-winning architect Kevin B Howard. The architects describe how they were inspired by the home’s surroundings, from the rugged mountain range to the pure blue ocean waters.

There were also practical reasons behind many of the design decisions of the property, as the gentile sea breezes demanded an open home with expanded vistas in every space. Particularly in the social rooms, such as the open-planned kitchen and living room, where the huge windows give full 180-degree views of that rugged coastline - while the steep hillside blocks direct exposure from Mexico’s powerful sun.

Each of the five bedrooms make use of the impressive views

If those views of that world-renowned golf course and sweeping ocean vistas weren’t enough, from January to March humpback and blue whales migrate down the Baja peninsula, meaning the owners of this magnificent property can even go whale watching from the comfort of their kitchen.

Elsewhere in this massive property - its footprint stretches to almost 6,200 sq-ft – a focus on natural materials reflects the rugged natural beauty surroundings, while high-tech appliances such as the state-of-the-art Meile kitchen ensure it is as equally advanced as it is stunning.

A 750-sq-ft infinity pool is the perfect place to take in the vistas

To make the very most of those astounding views, the property’s ample areas of outdoor entertaining space are the perfect spot to soak up the Mexican sun. Featuring a wet bar, two-story fountain, outdoor fire pit and BBQ, games room and of course, an infinity tile pool - which measures 750 sq-ft alone – it's safe to say visitors will struggle to be bored here.
